1●LET FRESH FLOWERS SET THE MOOD FOR SUMMER

Who says you have to spend a bomb. If you have a garden,  yard, patio, pots, a few shrubs or flowering bushes just put together some fresh flowers or foliage and you have a summer centerpiece.

This beautiful arrangement in my living area sets the summer mood.

In case you have to buy flowers for an occasion, pick up some reasonably priced ones.

Another trick is to club together any artificial flowers you have at home with some free foliage.

The point is to either spend nothing or just the least amount and set the fresh mood for summer.

Don’t have artificial flowers or plants? Just collect interesting twigs and some foliage and use your creativity.  I guarantee you will be surprised how much can be achieved without spending anything.

2● REMOVE VISUAL CLUTTER

I have removed all heavy decor items and stripped the living room to the bare minimum for an easy breezy look.

Only a few carefully selected pieces have been displayed. The reasons behind removing visual clutter is it gives the space enough room for air circulation. As the temperatures this year are abnormally high compared to previous years, an over decorated space feels hot and uncomfortable.

As you can see, you don’t have to spend any money to visually declutter any space. Just remove any heavy and extra things and let your home breathe.

Try visually decluttering your space, it is therapeutic.

3● DISPLAY COTTON, LINEN AND PASTEL SHADE FURNISHINGS

● Take down your heavy curtains and replace them with pastel shade fabrics. Cottons and linens look very chic and transform any place into a calm, cool and comfortable ambience.

I have replaced my heavy curtains with these simple white cotton ones. This fabric is breatheable and adds a soothing look to my place.

If you do not have light color curtains, purchase light cotton flowy fabric and DIY them into curtains. You don’t have to be a perfectionist.

You can either find cheap light curtains at a thrift store or sew your own. This kind of fabric is not expensive and will transform your home into a breezy home.

When you use light fabric in  summer  it eliminates the need for air-conditioning to an extent by calming your nerves.

Again, this trick works for me and I do not have to spend anything.

4● REMOVE CARPETS IF POSSIBLE AND ENJOY BARE FLOORS.

This might not work for those of you who live in cold climate and have wall to wall carpeting.

As I live in India, there is no culture of wall to wall carpets. Here, most of us remove carpets during  the summer, clean them and store them for the next winters.

Here, people use light cotton mats called durries. Personally, I love the bare floor look. It is soothing to the eyes and the floor feels inviting.

My living room has a bare floor in the summers.  It is soothing to the eyes and feels cool to the feet. The gentle elephants are a reminder of kindness and compassion. They make me relax. These beautiful cushion covers are hand embroidered. They are from Kashmir. Elephants are gentle creatures who believe in “live and let live.”

Looking at these beautiful elephants puts me at ease instantly.

5● GO EARTHY

Display earthy artifacts and decor items. Time to dig into the dark recesses of your cabinets and taking out long forgotten items.

Use creative ways to display earthy decor items. Use them to up your game on the environment front. Looking at earthy items will immediately connect you to nature and send you feel good signals.

This lovely stoneware is used in a variety of ways by me. Sometimes it is just displayed like this and on other occasions, I use them as a fruit bowl or a serving dish.  The stoneware has a beautifully earthy look and finish and using it fills me with great joy.

Well this is how I feel when I use this stoneware from Rajasthan , a state in India that I have with me for the last decade.

My main focus while writing this post had been to reuse and repurpose things that you already possess.

In these very tough times of hyperinflation, we have to think out of the box and get creative without spending.

Hope the above tips help you create a serene and cool summer look for your home. Save your money and use up what you already possess.

Do let me know how you created a cool summer look for your home in the comments.

I sincerely feel these frugal efforts will be great lessons for our children and people around us.
